ABOUT MANDAAR

A place to think build and learn

Mandaar is an independent institution exploring

how societies become capable, prosperous, free and self-renewing?

We bring together ideas, people and experiments

across society, economy, technology, enterprise and public life.

Rooted in Bihar. Open to the world.

PERSPECTIVES

A School of Thought in the Making

Mandaar is developing a school of thought—an evolving body of ideas about society, economy, institutions, knowledge, production, freedom and development.

We begin with reality. We question assumptions. We seek to understand before we act.

Observe → Question → Understand → Analyse → Evaluate → Act

PEOPLE

Institutions are built by people

Mandaar brings together researchers, entrepreneurs, practitioners, students, social workers and citizens who are curious, willing to question and ready to build.

We seek people who bring different experiences, perspectives and capabilities to a shared inquiry.

PLATFORMS

Ideas need platforms.

Mandaar creates platforms for dialogue, learning, collaboration and public reasoning—bringing people together around questions that matter.

PRACTICE

Trust is scarce.

We are building TraceIt to make products and their journeys more transparent.

Brands could generate TraceIT QR and put them on product packets. Consumers could scan the QR, see the journey, and verify authenticity — instantly.

PRACTICE

Lead is entering our food.

Bihar has among the highest reported levels of lead exposure among children in India, with serious implications for childhood development. Studies have found exceptionally high levels of lead—often from lead-chromate adulteration—in turmeric sold in Bihar, with turmeric emerging as an important source of exposure.

We decided not to merely document the problem. We started growing our own turmeric and encouraging others to do so.

Through the Safe Haldi Mission, we are developing a trusted source of safe turmeric for consumers, with plans to engage more farmers, and build a wider supply chain from Bihar.

PRACTICE

We have made our food system narrower than nature.

Dependence on a handful of crops has fuelled monoculture, eroded local food cultures and knowledge, diminished biodiversity, distorted markets and narrowed our diets—with consequences for health and resilience.

We decided not to merely document the problem. We started growing our own turmeric and encouraging others to do so.

We want to bring diversity back to the plate—by growing, discovering, cooking and creating demand for a wider range of plant species.

Every meal can become an act of biodiversity.

PLACE

Bihar is not merely where we work. It is where we experiment.

We see villages, towns and institutions not as passive recipients of development, but as places capable of generating knowledge, innovation and prosperity on their own terms.

Our work on the Rural Technology Park, research into local innovation ecosystems, and tools such as Quality Habitat Index (QHI) explore how places can understand their strengths, measure their health and build their own capacity.

Mandaar is still becoming.

We are building an institution where ideas become knowledge, knowledge becomes capability, and capability becomes action.

An institution that brings together people, perspectives, platforms, practice and place to understand reality, experiment with possibilities and build what lasts.

Perspectives. People. Platforms. Practice. Place.
